Find the SOT

Well, there's an O and a T at least.  With regard to the inclusion of SOT symbols in my painitngs......
I'm a bit wary of the secret club aspect of the thing. Sounds a bit like joining the Masons, devil worship, sworn to secrecy and a comitment to find the holy Grail.

  1. I see it closer to the The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood than the Masons. Although we keep our activities quiet at AAArt, we aren't necessarily a secret society.

I guess to me, the question arises, what are the SOT, truly about? What, other than MBK's invitation to join, does it take to be a member of SOT? I know when I had suggested we write a manifesto in Savannah, people didn't really take me seriously or think that was necessary. But perhaps, we should examine, what convictions, philosophies, and passions pull us together again and again.

  2. Devil Worship? Masons? I don't know what you were doing on the trip to Sante Fe, but I was mostly involved with painting. :) Anyway, I believe the SOTs deserve a little secrecy within their numbers. The collection of the group has primarily been orchestrated by MKB, but once the group is together we pour a generous amount of our talents and passions into the moment. That leads into Lucas's comment; this may seem generic, but the underlying ideas that allow SOTs to work well is the individual's passion behind their art. There may be many differences among the group, but everyone of us has the insight to acknowledge and appreciate those differences. To put it simply, we're all cool people who get along with other cool people.

Great piece MBK. You haven't lost that skill! Maybe all the devil worshiping is paying off. :)

  3. Also, did you scan this piece with added text? If you look closely there seems to be strange text over the doors and windows?

  5. I think writing out a mission statement or whatever was mentioned earlier seems a bit too formal. Although I wouldn't mind getting together more often for afternoons or day trips. It would strengthen our ties, give us more inspiration for artwork and more things to post about.

Is it really secrecy we are talking about or more of an exclusivity?

  6. On Jay's point, there was an element of selection at the front end, a recognition of something that I see in you all that I also see in me, Something that I respect and see as a humanity, a passion beyond the necessary. A drive, a hunger, a desire. Those are nothing to do with style but sit at a deeper level. Those qualities hopefully emerge in all that we say and do, including our art but not limited to our art. Lucas's question is one that I addressed over the summer at our studio afternoon, and have returned to again and again as I prepare for Maine. Certainly, Elisha we could do more than just yearly trips and the blog is a step towards that. Good to hear from y'all.

  7. Good eye Jay. There is indeed a bunch of type in the piece beneath the paint surface.
