Two Buildings

Here is my favorite watercolor painting I did in Savannah. I did it for the Sketchcrawl thing going on, but I decided that I would like to keep it.

Kim and I took hundreds of photos the whole trip, so I have plenty of reference. I did this sketch this morning. Architecture is tough for me, so this is good practice.

  1. Nice job!! I think you're getting the hang of this architecture stuff. Did you draw a sketch before you worked on it digitally? I love the grey shadow areas on the red.

  2. Nice lively drawing, Jake. I dont remember this building at all. I like the life and variety that you brought to the windows. One of the problems with architectural drawing is that repetitive elements get treated repetitively as if they were all equal, and that can kill a drawing stone dead. Love the linework in the trees.

  3. I was really surprised when you showed us the white house at the dining table that night. its so bold and stark and loose. Its not like the watercolours I've seen you do before. I love its confidence and its proportion. The house fits so nicely in the page.

  4. Thanks. I drew most of it in SketchBook, a nice program for line sketching. Then I took it over to PhotoShop to finish. It all didn't take very long, and I think the gestural quality is what I like. I'm trying new things, and I'm inspired by a lot of what I've seen from you all in Savannah. Seeing everyone struggle with their own artwork makes drawing and painting more approachable. Thanks for commenting. It's honestly very helpful.

  5. Wow both of these are great. The color choices in both were very smart. I really like the cropping and directional forces in the white house. The new one has a great vintage feel to it. Ill have to check out that program.

Lets keep this momentum going! Ill get some stuff up soon, just finished the dining room watercolor, oh caleb.

  6. I really love the second one. The simplicity mixed with the contrast of color and gray scale is really eye catching. I also love the line work in the trees.
